    Call for Expression of Interest

The BC Human Rights Tribunal is seeking volunteers for an Advisory Group to make recommendations about the process for administering Tribunal discretion under s. 27(1) of the Human Rights Code.

Qualified candidates should have experience with the Tribunal’s application to dismiss process under s. 27(1) of the Human Rights Code. Ideal candidates will also have experience with the Tribunal’s Case Path Pilot and/or summary trials in the BC Supreme Court.

    Information

Section 27(1) of the Human Rights Code allows for the Tribunal to dismiss complaints without a hearing in certain circumstances. The Tribunal is reviewing its process for administering its s. 27(1) discretion to ensure it operates consistently with the purpose of that discretion and the Tribunal’s operating reality. It is seeking the input of an Advisory Group to make recommendations on how to most efficiently and fairly administer its s. 27(1) powers.

The Advisory Group’s work will be as follows:

    • Prior to first meeting:
      • Tribunal will produce first discussion paper for the Advisory Group, setting out background and procedural options
    • October 27, 2025:
      • Advisory Group will meet from 13:00-15:00 to discuss procedural options
    • November 2025:
      • Advisory Group will produce draft feedback and recommendations related to procedural options
    • December 2025:
      • Tribunal will produce second discussion paper, incorporating the Group’s feedback and presenting draft recommendations
    • January 2026:
      • Advisory Group will meet to finalize recommendations
    • January 2026:
      • Advisory Group will submit its report and final recommendations to the Tribunal.

Please express your interest, including how your experience is suitable for this work, by September 8, 2025 to Emily Ohler, by email at: BCHumanRightsTribunal@gov.bc.ca.

Please note that not all expressions of interest will result in placement on the Advisory Group.
