Laura Matthews was appointed as a part-time member of the Tribunal on February 24, 2020. Ms. Matthews was called to the Bar of British Columbia in December 2011. She began her career with the Ministry of Family Justice Services as a mediator on the Child Protection Roster. She was recruited as an Indigenous Mediator and gained extensive experience delivering mediation services to remote and underserved Indigenous Communities. Ms. Matthews has extensive work with the Legal Services Society providing community based legal outreach workshops throughout BC, educating communities on the use of mediation in Child Protection as well as Gladue rights for Indigenous offenders. She continued her work with the Legal Services Society in Saskatchewan training, writing and mentoring of the Gladue reports. Over the last two years, she has also been travelling throughout British Columbia co-facilitating Wrapping Our Ways Around Them – Aboriginal Communities and the Child, Family and Community Service Act.
Ms. Matthews maintains a legal practice in the Peace River region. She is passionate about providing underserviced communities with the education, representation and processes necessary to contribute to reconciliation.
